Philips was founded by Frederik Philips and his son Gerard Philips in 1891 in Eindhoven in Holland. They concentrated on mass production of incandescent lamps. By the end of the 1890s Philips & Co. is one of the largest producers in the Netherlands and, with 1,000 employees, the countrys largest industrial employer. In 1928 Philips bought Mullard after a joint venture in vacuum tubes. Philips had been one of main originators with in the musical field. They invented the compact cassette and CD discs and also some of the great valve designs such as the EL34 and EL84.
PCC88 PHILIPS

Philips PCC88 has the same midrange warmth and dynamics that has made the Mullard ECC88 & E88CC family of valves so famous. Philips owned the Mullard brand so these are identical in construction, sound and parts to the Mullard.

The only difference is the PCC88 has 7 volt heater whereas the ECC88 & 6922 family of valves has a 6.3 volt heater. So the valves are totally interchangeable.

A problem that is widely reported on the internet which many people have had with American high end amplifiers such as Conrad-Johnson. These amplifiers run the heater voltages on the ECC88 6922 in excess of the 6.3 volts. This causes the valve to go noisy after around 200 hours use.

The PCC88 having a 7 volt heater in this application gives extended life and the same Audio performance. They are also cheaper than their 6.3 volt rated brothers.
So it is simple win all the way round.

The Philips PCC88 has a transparent and warm midband which is excellent on vocals and strings. The top end has clarity and speed with plenty of deep musical bass definition.

Philips PCC88 is an Audio bargain as you get all the Mullard sound at super low price when compared to the E88CC and 6922. The PCC88 Philips has long been a favourite of many our customers for EAR Products.
