The EM84 tuning indicator, or magic eye as it is known, was used to display the optimum tuning point of a receiver, or the recording level of a tape recorder.

The EM84 was used in professional reel to reel tape recorders as a recording level indicator to set optimum recording level. More recently these have been used in Audio and Guitar amplifier applications.

The Tungsram EM84 was made in Hungary and this was rebranded by many manufactures such as Brimar and Philips.
