Radio Technique 5840 EF732 is a high quality sub miniature pentode that is well known for its extremely low noise and low microphonics making it an excellent choice for use in valve microphones.

RT was part of Philips Dario as was Mullard and RT was one of the best military manufacture of valve in France. Over the years these have been very popular in such microphones as they have very low noise and produce a very refined sound. Some are marked EF732 some are marked 5840, some green some white print.

Recording engineers really like this valve as they prefer the warmer and fuller response in the midband over The leaner sounding American made types. RT being part of the Philips group who also owned Mullard, one engineer told me that these have the Mullard Magic which I thought really sums up this valve sound perfectly.

EF732 5840 is currently used in Telefunkens current production models of the AK-47mkII and ELA M 260.5840 is electrically similar to the AC701K which was used in such microphones as the Neumann M49.
