These are specially selected full revalve kits for Mesa Boogie owners. The sets consist of specially position selected pre amp valves that have been selected for each position in your Mesa. We have 2 pre amp kits, Standard gain, to give a warm and fat overdrive and Our Classic kit provides boogie owners with a valve close in tone to the vintage Mullard ECC83.
In terms of 6L6GC we have selected sets available that will work with the boogies fixed bias arrangement. Certain 6L6GC will be better for certain kinds of music and these we have indicated in our product description.
This kit is for the Mesa 400 Plus bass head which was originally fitted with Mesa STR 425/5881 and offers an upgrade over the stock Chinese 6L6GC STR 440.It is designed to give your Mesa 400 Plus bass a tight clear and well defined bass sound with punchy lows. This will give you the original Mesa 400 Plus 5881/STR-425 stadium sound.
The Harma ECC83 STR is used as it has a number of advantages over other 12AX7 types such as reduced microphonics and better isolation from vibration. The valve is very well balanced with nice even bass which has plenty of depth. The mid range is clean and transparent and has a nice rounded tone.
The Harma 5881 is the original Military grade button based item that Mesa used as the STR-425. This valve is one of the most reliable 6L6 types ever built with decades of use in Military applications. This valve is particularly good for bass applications due to resilience to vibration. It also offers the longest life expectancy when compared to every modern production 6L6GC produced today. Indeed I have seen many 400 plus amplifiers which date from 1994-1996 which still have the original valves. This is simply astounding as many modern 6L6GC valves will get no where near this life span.
This is why Mesa used this valve to power their designs thought the 1980's and 1990's.
The Harma 5881 valve removes the flabby bass & muddy mid associated with the Chinese made STR 440. The 5881 also produces a cleaner and punchier midrange than the STR 440. The top end performance has a nice snap without being hard.
The Harma 5881 produces a well balanced thick sound that is ideal for that big clear Boogie bass sound.
The kit consists of 16 valves.
