The ECL86 was designed specifically for audio applications as this valve was intended for commercial use in low power mono and stereo applications.

The company took the Mullard design and made a number of improvements. They paid particular attention to the sensitivity of the valve so the grid of the triode section will produce the maximum output power from the pentode section.

Sylvania used very tight manufacturing and quality control procedures in production.
