This 5881 Cryo upgrade kit covers the Black Star Series One 104 head and covers the head which was originally fitted with EL34 or 6L6GC. With a simple re bias of the output valves the head is fitted with new old stock Harma 5881 Cryo to suit most hard rock and metal player's demands. It is designed to provide the classic tight punchy rock sound which is suited to harder rock and metal styles .

This combination is designed to give you the classic British American rock sound that was associated with Mesa and Marshall amplifiers of the 1980's along with the more modern day voicing that the Black star offers.

The Cryo treatment gives a permanent change to the valves performance. The additional benefits such as better clarity, larger and improved sound stage with increased definition under distortion are what the treated valves provide and ensure a lasting improvement to you sound over the untreated items.

The Harma ECC83 Retro Cryo provides a harmonically rich and detailed sound with excellent 3D midrange warmth. This valve has a traditional British voiced sound that has a huge singing sustaining tone when overdriven. The outstanding feature of this valve is its smooth linear midrange response and extended frequency response so you get smooth warm overdrive with tight fat punchy lows.

The Philips Jan Military ECC82-5814A Cryo has a number of unique features such as high grade filament isolation so even after long periods of use the filament will not degrade. The 5814A were designed to be immune to shock and vibration as they were designed for military aircraft and they were also rated for long life. To put it simply, no modern day ECC82 is made to this specification and no modern day ECC82 sounds like it. The Philips overdrives very evenly and does not fall apart when you saturate the amplifier. The 5814A improves the amplifier as it losses the grainy unmusical fuzz that is displayed by many modern ECC82 in the Blackstar. This valve has outperformed many more expensive ECC82 and therefore we have used it in this kit.

The Harma 5881 Cryo is the button based Russian military valve that powered the Marshall and Mesa Boogie amps (STR 425) in the late eighties. The 5881 valve has a bullet proof reputation for reliability and proven track record over decades of use in Russian military applications.
The 5881 valve provides a very tight and focused sound which is very punchy. The valve is also very lean in the midrange which makes it an ideal choice if you scoop out the mids. The 5881 is very aggressive sounding when really pushed which is great for metal riffing and chording. Solo guitar and fast runs also cut through the mix and the valve also remains tight with dropped tunings.
This is an excellent choice for hard rock/metal and fusion players in the Black star.
