The Mullard Radio Valve Co. Ltd was founded in 1920. In 1923,to meet the huge consumer demand in electronics Mullard entered an agreement with Philips of Holland and by 1926 Philips bought Mullard and established one of the greatest valve manufacturing companies in world history.

They developed many iconic valve such as the ECC83, EF86, EL34,EL37, EL84, GZ34 and GZ37.These are regarded as the best valves of their type ever made and original Mullard items are high prized by Musicians Broadcasters and Audiophiles the world over due to their sound quality. You can see how these valves were made on the front of our website in the Blackburn storey.
The 85A2 is a small, special quality voltage stabiliser and was designed to operate in the high shock and vibration applications. These valves were made for long life and were aimed at industrial and military applications.

These were used in some of the Croft range of amplifiers as a voltage regulator.

In Croft amplifiers the voltage regulator valve is part of the power supply electronics and customers have found that it does influence the sound.

Customers who have tried various 85A2 have concluded the Mullard item is the best. They comment that with the Mullard item fitted the sound is very solid and the bass is faster. It is far more natural with better projection resulting in a less processed sound. In our own tests the Mullard 85A2 is very stable giving the correct voltage regulation without deviation. The valves are marked CV449
